The Jack and Nonie Swanson Papers contains a photograph album, a scrapbook, news clippings, photographs, a trip diary and memorabilia of the Swanson's time on Saint Paul Island, Alaska, as teachers. Photographs mainly depict daily life of the Swansons and other government employees on the Island. Photographs of native schoolchildren, fur seals, blue foxes and pet cats on the island are also included in this collection. The scrapbook has a narrative, describing life on the island for the Swanson's and those living on the island such as the village nurse, Petey Kerr, the Russian priest, Father Baranoff, as well as the pet cats on the island. The photograph album mainly includes photographs of the landscape, fur seals and blue foxes on Saint Paul Island. Loose black-and-white photographs depict village life as well, many of the photographs have written descriptions on the back. Manuscript materials mainly include publication clippings and typescript notes about fur seals, the history of and life on Saint Paul Island, Alaska, including letters from Nonie Swanson to her family that were later published in a Washington newspaper. This collection also has a trip diary kept by Nonie Swanson during the Swanson's trek from Seattle, Washington to the Saint Paul Island in 1946 via the "Penguin" ship, correspondence from both Jack and Nonie Swanson to family and friends, and notes and letters to the Swansongs from natives and Father Baranoff.

Nonie Swanson, the eighth child of wheat farmer A. J. Friedrich, was born in Hartline, Washington, in 1919. Following high school, she attended Eastern Washington Normal School (now Eastern Washington University), where she met and married Jack (Victor H.) Swanson in 1939. The couple lived and taught in Ione, Washington, until 1941, when they moved to Seattle to work at the Boeing Aircraft Corporation for the duration of World War II.
